About Me

#disabled #disabledpoet #disabledacademic

I'm a writer, learner, thinker, and teacher passionate about broad accessibility and undoing the harm that ableist and racist histories exert on institutions. I am finishing my 2nd master's degree in policy with a double focus on criminal justice policy and operations & management; my first was in poetry. I have two books forthcoming, both creative works loosely about arts in prison, and have published my poetry and prose in internationally recognized journals including POETRY, jubilat, and more. I can seem nervous and anxious at first; I thrive with validation and clear communication to learn when I can improve upon a task. My experiences and interests are varied, spanning from quantitative skills like working with budgets, to very "soft" skills like effectively communicating with people in distress. I've worked for non-profits, academic institutions, retail locations, and contracting companies. Due to my health needs, I am particularly interested in work I can do on my own schedule. I am always able to complete deliverables on time, however I hope for flexibility in when and how that work gets done. I take pride in my kindness and empathy and hope to bring my humor to wherever I end up employed. Learn more at leighksugar.com.

Ideal Workplace Values

I enjoy working with people who are passionate about their work, and who are also committed to organizational sustainability, meaning working smart for the long-term rather than intensely but burning out. I am always looking to grow my skills and understanding of all subjects, particularly with regard to race and racism, classism, and ableism. As a white woman I take very seriously the privileges I've been afforded, and actively seek to work with folks who are also interested in imagining a world without such rampant racism.
