My ability to empathize with others on the Autism Spectrum. When I create materials, I understand the need for clear directions, repetition, and visual aids. Things that would be completely ignored or dismissed like using terms like "social norms are being kind", I am able to see why it isn't helpful or damaging. I can use my life experiences and common symptoms to empathize and translate. For example, social norms are a type of communication done through actions and behaviors. This re-frames ALL social norms in a different lens. Someone isn't "unkind" for not naturally being able to understand social norms and we can be taught to study and analyze situations. To simplify it to "social norms is kindness" is unhelpful and damaging. I would use my empathy and experiences to enhance and support Autistic students.
